Fight Cancer With Laughter
Cancer is the most dreaded disease in the world today. It spells trauma, stress, pain and fear.. Extreme physical, mental and emotional stress weakens the immune system, which is a major causative factor in the development of cancer. Scientific studies have proved that laughter has a powerful and immediate strengthening effect on the immune system. It quickly increases immunoglobulin levels that help fight infection and increases the number of Natural Killer Cells (NK cells) in the blood, which plays a key role in cancer prevention. Hearty laughter quickly counters depression and negative outlook making it easier for patients to retain full control of their mental abilities and keep their spirits high.
Speaking at an event recently organized by the Coimbatore Cancer Foundation (CCF), Rajalaksmi Padmanabhan, a 65-year-old cancer survivor and a certified Laughter Yoga Teacher urged people to laugh to their heart’s content. She said that nothing can heal better than laughter. “I was diagnosed with tumor a few years back. It was laughter therapy that helped me. Laughter improves your breathing and is a great cardio exercise.” She now conducts laughter sessions at hospitals, schools and old-age homes.
The event was organized in order to spread the message that cancer is not a death sentence. It aims to raise awareness about cancer and its early detection and that there is life after cancer. The event also promotes the concept of End Of Life Care which works on giving the best last days for people with terminal cancer. They want to help them spend their last days with their family laughing and enjoying, instead of in an impersonal surrounding like a hospital, hooked up to tubes.”
